FEATURED ARTIST OF THE MONTH: Vickie A. Johnson
My artistic technique can best be characterized as a metamorphosis. I have derived much of my inspiration from Post-Impressionistic artists such as Cezanne and Van Gogh, winding curving and vibrant lines of color into subject I portray. My compositions contain bold, unrealistic colors and expressive brushstrokes. Trees are a large part of my subject matter. I feel a kinship with them because they reflect the difficulties and triumphs of life – trees are survivors, like me.
Born in 1955 in Tennessee, I have also lived in Florida, Texas, Panama (Central America), and now in Georgia with my husband, Christopher. I have two sons, as well as hundreds of other “children” who consider me a mentor and friend. My work was first shown in 1971 in Indialantic, Florida, where I took an honorary mention as a teenager in an all-adult art show. I have displayed works for sale in bank lobbies, meeting with success in selling all. Over the years I have created commissioned work for scores of customers ranging from portraiture, to landscape, to abstract creations. I currently teach art at the high school level, and have been the recipient of the P. Buckley Moss Foundation’s grant for special learners as a result of my efforts in sharing art with special education students.
